Is there cultic vain repetition in Church worship? Jesus warned us against it. There certainly seems to be a lot of repetition in today’s music, is this what Jesus meant? If there is ‘vain repetition’ we will never know it unless we define it. So the first question to answer is ‘what is it?’.
The Quality of Awe
Jesus said, ‘We know what we worship’. Knowing what we worship is key and what we ‘know’ is increasing. If we were not in awe of God before we will be. The ‘quality of awe’ on which our worship hinges is about to increase in dramatic proportions.
Awe is defined as, ‘a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.’ We ought to be in awe of God! But there are distinct levels when it comes to being awestruck. Make no mistake about it though, the quality of awe is increasing in the church. That is, the degree of awe is growing and being reflected in our worship. It is increasing because what we are seeing is shifting. Get ready because the magnitude of what can be seen of God is about to take a leap! It will affect the quality of awe.
Dealing with Reluctant Worship
Reluctant worship is often what God gets. Perhaps it is because the arguments of atheists resonate with us… despite the fact we are Christians.
