Heaven’s Golden Orb
The most beautiful Golden Orb we are not supposed to chase!
A few years ago I was given a tremendous prophetic experience. It unfolded while I was speaking in a conference in Guatemala. Despite the dramatic power of the experience it miraculously did not interrupt the message. It was profoundly supernatural! Even today it continues to affect my understanding of our role in revival, and particularly the posture we should adopt when a wave of God’s Spirit touches the earth.
I saw the hand of the Lord holding a beautiful Orb. He then drew back His arm and released it. As I watched it roll across the floor I knew it represented revival moving across the earth. He said, “This represents all that I give.” The ball was magnificent, glowing with beauty and rich colour. Immediately I understood that from the moment it left His hand, it had already begun to lose momentum. This was the heart of the message to me.
Just like the glory on the face of Moses coming down from the mountain; it will pass away(2 Corinthians 3:13). God has purposely planned this so our affection would belong to Him alone. One may argue that to love Him is to love His gifts, but they are not the same. As such, revivals will never be perpetual without a people fully fixed on Him, the Giver. From the instant an outpouring is birthed, it enters a temporary realm and becomes finite.
Throughout the day as I meditated on the vision a chronology of revival became clear. That is, I saw the natural tendencies of men pertaining to God’s gifts. It began with men chasing the ball.
The Orb’s Journey
As I meditated on the vision the Spirit said, “Look closer!” My vision zoomed in as I focused, revealing the Orb to be more of a frame, a container of sorts. Inside it were gifts represented as fruit; vines rich with grapes. I then noticed that as the momentum of the Orb rotated these ‘good things’ were spinning off in different directions. The Orb was essentially sowing the blessings God was happy to give. However, two things were inevitable. The ball would soon come to a stop and the blessings inside would run out.
I began to feel grieved as it was clear those who chased the orb rejoiced in it but failed to see its actual purpose. They, like myself, were captured with delight by its beauty and richness. We missed the fact that every step toward the rolling ball was one more step away from the Lord. Soon the Orb came to a stop and found itself in a desolate place. We were now very distant from where we had begun.
A Desolate Place
The faded orb, tarnished with the dust of the earth, remained an empty frame having emptied itself. Most, unfortunately, did not notice. They did note the fact that it was no longer moving. Out of disappointment some suggested it could be kick-started. They encouraged others to ‘get behind the Orb’, believing if they pushed it, it might return to its former glory.
The people, now clearly connected through their history, were committed to making something happen and began to push it. From time to time it would find a dip in the ground which would create the illusion it rolled of its own accord. With great exhilaration they rejoiced, ‘Its back! Its back!’ The flurry of hope stirred a fresh commitment. Leaders seized the moment to encourage an even deeper allegiance based on this fresh momentum.
The enthusiasm was short-lived. The labour was exhausting and soon one would grow weary of pushing and would fall away or simply lose interest. These would then wander aimlessly in what was clearly a barren place. As I surveyed the dreary landscape there were many orbs being pushed and many more disillusioned solitary travellers. Occasionally these wanderers would form little clusters for their mutual comfort. They lived in the glow of their past, recounting the story of the orbs they chased and the beauty it brought to their lives.
Eventually, another orb would roll by. This one was a different colour, a little faster and a little bigger. Often the leaders pushing one orb would berate others, each confidently claiming their own authenticity. Some however would be attracted to the momentum of the new orb, and would exchange their loyalties one for the other. My heart ached at the futility of this sight.
The Purpose of the Orb
It was now clear God had always intended another outcome. The Orbs rolling into the barren wilderness are not to lead us there, but to show those who are lost, the way home. They are given not as a destination but as a point of direction. Any sensible person will eventually wonder what can be found in the direction from which they come. Like flares for those in darkness, they are proverbial trails of bread crumbs, leading us to Him.
The Lord never intended us to run blindly into the wilderness chasing His blessings. Like rainbows, they speak of the promise but are not the promise. They are diminishing waves pointing to what endures forever. Like Israel, they try to ‘look steadily at the end of what was passing away’. (2 Corinthians 3:13)
There is a perpetual flow of waves coming from God, each one more significant than the previous. Thus God is simply looking for a generation to stand at the Gate of Heaven to welcome them. These will understand and differentiate between the gift and the Giver. They will be free to fully enjoy each wave without chasing them into oblivion. They wait for a city whose maker is God, they desire nothing less. “This is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face, O God of Jacob.”(Psalm 24:6)
