A Critical Test for Spiritual All Leaders – Passing the Gore Test
If you cannot stand the sight of blood you best not work in an Emergency Room. The Gore Test is the most basic requirement for any ER nurse or Doctor. Being able to handle the reality of defective flesh is the first in a long list of credentials separating suitable from unsuitable candidates for this job. Similarly, in the context of ministry, one must be able to deal with the carnage of humanity in all its forms.

Leadership is an attractive thing in that many people aspire to having a following of some sort. A quest which does not differ in many who pursue ministry. The real question is ‘what ingredients make for a person of authority in the Kingdom of God?’ While there are many contributing factors in the formation of a man or woman of influence, passing the Gore Test is a significant threshold.
What is the Gore Test? Simply put, it is the ability to see blood without fainting. Doctors come face to face with the worst imaginable forms of human decay. If anyone aspires to be ER staff, but are squeamish about torn and broken bodies, you might want to veer in a different direction. The same is true for anyone hoping to be leaders in the Body of Christ! If you cannot embrace the atrophy and weakness of the fallen human condition, God will not assign you authority over His people. You must first past the Gore Test.
When you are called to ministry on any level you will be exposed to real humanity. You will see the hateful, treacherous, and selfish devices of people who should know better. If you are appalled and offended you will recoil in shock. Eventually you will be wounded and disillusioned about the very nature of Christianity and Church. Yet, like Jesus said, the well do not need a doctor (Mark 2:17). And so those who are called to treat diseased people cannot gasp in horror at their patients. We must be a solution. If we cannot face the ugliness of the disease that is fallen man we cannot treat it.
Over the years countless people with authentic ministries have become disillusioned in this way. We must learn to overcome. The Lord prepares us by gradually exposing us to the disease of humanity. As He does our hearts are changed and we become solutions. Slowly but surely we gain another layer of His heart and increase in love and authority.
This is the nature of all ministry. The truth is every believer must face this test as we are each called to serve in some capacity. Persevere through these moments and you will be changed. The Gore Test is one of the most important testings you will face as a spiritual leader. At the same time it is also the way God humbles you, exposes your heart and then transforms you. Persevere!
