Jesus addresses Pretentious Pseudo Saviours
A recent article is one of many circulating social media these days addressing white privilege. The truth is, racism is alive and well. However identifying the guilty is not as easy as picking the white man out of the crowd. Jesus gave us a clear indicator to track the real source of racism.
Racism and Injustice
While Jesus did not directly deal with racism, He addressed the root of it. Being the Son of God, He had some first hand experience with murderous rage, ultimately becoming a willing victim. He understood the murder in men’s hearts and on one occasion confronted those who denied having it. Ironically, these were the ones focused on making amends for past injustice. Sound familiar? His encounter gives us a critical template for identifying the truly guilty. Here is the scenario.
It happened when facing the God-hating voices of those who claimed to speak for justice (Jewish social justice warriors of the 1st Century). In His case, these people were posturing as lovers of God, and had, as one of their aims, pursuing justice for dead prophets. Their devotion was sadly misplaced! Jesus pulled back the veil on their hypocrisy, showing how their zeal betrayed the fact they were very much the same as those who killed the prophets. Here is what He said!
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.” – Matthew 23:29-31
His point is simple but largely missed. He was saying in the words of Shakespeare’s ‘me thinks thou dost protest to much!’ Which is to say, ‘your protests manifest your guilt.’ The fact you are driven to honour the prophets at this pointless time demonstrates you are the offspring of murderers’. Their gestures were not to make authentic amends, but a way to deal with an inner conflict they could not resolve. They were murderers within, though they perhaps did not wish to be, hence, they are guiltily driven. So Jesus, rather than commending them, exposes their guilt as the evidence they are complicit.
The New Racists
How does this relate to the present issue of white-privilege and the commensurate guilt. Simply in this: Guilt exposes the guilty. Those who feel that guilt propose a form of penance–a payment for their guilt. In so doing they expose their hearts. At least that is the way Jesus sees it.
Worse yet, they do not have the courage to act alone but want everyone else to do it first. This in turn exposes their hubris. That is, besides their guilt they also feel morally superior. If they are guilty then surely all of us must be secretly racist. Then, to make matters worse, their insane fix is more racism, again demonstrating who and what they are! Racism is part of their nature.
But let’s think about their solution to racism–more racism. While it is ridiculous, they being what they are, cannot see it. If they had been alive in the former time they would have been the ‘slave owners’, which was Jesus’ point! In this they witness against themselves!
It is a twisted mind which cannot see that one atrocity is seed for another. Their proposal is not to eliminate the seeds of injustice but to spread it around. Somehow planting seeds of injustice in the opposite field will magically produce justice. Yet, the real solution to injustice is not equally sharing it, but simply providing justice for all. Yet these hate driven warriors of injustice have no comprehension of authentic justice. They are chaff blowing in the wind, willing pawns of a spirit they cannot comprehend.
Today we stand at the threshold of another cycle of harvest with choices to be made. While these wanna-be saviours parade as crusaders for justice, hiding beneath their self-righteous veneer lies the truth. They are the same oppressors of past generations, but now they use guilt to raise their own banner once again. They are pretend saviours! All in a thinly veiled effort to oppress without ever looking like an oppressor.
Like the religious leaders of Jesus day they cannot see or understand justice. Instead they seize upon issues like white-privilege in order to paint themselves as morally superior. Their solutions betray their true nature. They are oppressors no matter what side of the issue they are on. Tyranny is in their hearts and they lust to be masters by any means necessary.
All of which stands in contrast to true justice. While it may be that God allows this sick version of justice to create a larger appetite for the real, there is no comparison. As such there is a justice coming to the earth from the One who is Just. As we align with Him we become administrators of true justice. Come Lord, Come!
‘In mercy the throne will be established;
And One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David,
Judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness.”’ – Isaiah 16:5
